from tree to tree

“Don’t run after pleasure and neglect the practice of meditation. If you forget the goal of life and get caught in the pleasures of the world, you will come to envy those who put meditation first.”
– the Buddha

Are you finding yourself mindlessly jumping from tree to tree? If you are a Vipassana meditator, this is a good time for meditation. If you don’t know Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka, I suggest you visit this website and sign up for a 10-day introduction course at one of the many centers around the world.

Be happy!

I always kept meditation first, and proud to say that I’ve been regularly meditating morning and evening for more than 10 years. I’d been in 8 vipassana course, including 1 sattipathana. Despite I’m mostly indulging in pleasures. Though I make out time for meditation ( often I sleep whole 1 hour sitting). My problem now is, I couldn’t give enough time to my duties. With my struggle for equanimity it seems I’m losing the battle. I could never let my seniors happy with my work, due to distractions which was always out of my control. I just can’t help myself. I’m determined not to give up regular vipassana practice at any cost…. PLEASE HELP!

    Dear bikram,

Watch what you are saying! First you say you put Vipassana meditation first. Then you say you indulge in sensual pleasures and that you often sleep through your sittings.

Obeserve yourself carefully; “Is my life becoming better from practicing Vipassana morning and evening? I used to have this much tension in my life, this much stress, anger, fear, passion etc. Is it becoming less?”. If your answer is no, then something is wrong. Either the technique does not work, or you are not practicing correctly. But the technique does work – it is benefiting so many thousands of people all over the world – so you are not practicing correctly.

Talk with your guide, your teacher, and find out what you are doing wrong.

If you truly put Vipassana meditation first, you will find it becomes easy to give time to your duties instead of sensual pleasures.

    With metta,
